These are scary, stressful, crazy times that we are living in right now. Schools are closed. Masses are cancelled. Easter will be celebrated online, without the family and friends we usually celebrate with.
In times of crisis and pandemic, it can be so easy to turn away from the faith. It can be so easy to turn away from God. It can be so easy to question God, to yell at God, to wonder where He is. Why would He do this to us?
In times of crisis and pandemic, in times of hardship and struggle, that is when saints are made!
I highly recommend that each of you listen to the song, “I Still Believe” by Jeremy Camp, either the 2002 or 2020 version, or both. If you don’t know the story behind the song (a movie was made about this story), I’ll give you the basic rundown (there will be spoilers). Jeremy Camp’s wife was sick with cancer, and it was shortly after they got married that she died. He wrote this song, to remind himself, and as a prayer to God, that even though his wife died, he still believes in God.
My favourite line in the song is, “Even when I cannot see, I still believe.” Even when I cannot see when COVID-19 will end, I still believe. Even when I cannot finish my last year at school, I still believe. Even when I cannot go to the Easter Vigil, or Easter Sunday Mass, I still believe.
In times of crisis and pandemic, we have a choice to make. A choice to be angry, stressed, nervous, and fearful. Or a choice to trust, to love, to hope, to have faith. Things are uncertain. Things are unknown. We don’t know what is going to happen in the next week, month, year. But if we believe that God is with us, that He has a wonderful plan for our lives, then we can get through this. We may still feel scared, angry, and stressed, but we will know that He is good. We can get through this with a smile on our faces!
In times of crisis and pandemic, in times of hardship and struggle, that is when saints are made! Be a Saint! However that looks for you, be a saint!
